Handwriting

Handwriting remains a vital skill in primary education. While children increasingly use technology, the ability to write clearly and confidently by hand supports many areas of learning. Developing good handwriting helps children:

  • Communicate their ideas clearly

  • Write more fluently, allowing them to focus on the content rather than the mechanics of writing

  • Build confidence in all written tasks across the curriculum

  • Organise their thinking through note-taking and planning

  • Develop fine motor skills that support wider physical development

At Brentry Primary School, we place strong emphasis on teaching correct letter formation, joining, spacing and presentation. Good handwriting not only helps children take pride in their work but also lays a foundation for success in later schooling and everyday life.  We follow the letter join scheme for handwriting.  We are so proud of the progress our pupils are making with their handwriting.  Below is an example oaf child in Year 6 work:

Writing

Writing is a fundamental skill that underpins learning across the whole curriculum. In Brentry Primary School, children learn to express their ideas clearly, creatively and with increasing accuracy. Strong writing skills help children to:

  • Communicate their thoughts, experiences and understanding

  • Develop imagination and creativity through stories, poems and descriptive pieces

  • Build accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation

  • Organise and structure information effectively

  • Gain confidence in sharing their ideas with others

  • Succeed across all subjects, from science to history, where written explanations are essential

We place great importance on giving children regular, meaningful opportunities to write for a range of purposes and audiences. By nurturing a love of writing and teaching the skills needed to write well, we help children become confident communicators for life.

We share high quality WAGOLL's with our pupils' to start the writing journey to ensure they understand the text structure and language features which are expected.  At the end of every two weeks, we complete a piece of independent writing.
