  • Year 4 Geography

As part of year 4’s Geography unit ‘Where our food comes from’, we looked at different food products such as bananas, avocados and red meats and plotted their country of origin on a world map. We then measured the distance from here to the U.K. with our rulers and used a scale bar (1cm = 8000km) to work out the total food miles of the product before it gets to our mouths!

The children loved this activity and not only did it teach us key vocabulary like ‘air freight’, ‘carbon footprint’, ‘importation’ and ‘food miles’ but it also intertwined some key maths knowledge too!
