Spelling

EYFS & KS1: Twinkl Phonics

Where can I find my child's spellings?

As well as the paper copies brought home from class, your child's weekly spellings can be found on their class webpage. There you will also be able to confirm the day of their weekly, in-class spelling test.

I thought Phonics was reading not spelling...

Phonics is both! It is true that your child's phonics book is their reading book. This is because part of their Phonics learning is blending. This is where the child merges the individual phonemes to create the sound of a word which is recognisable to them. The reverse process of this is segmenting. This is when a child hears a whole word and tries to break it into phonemes, which can be used to spell the word.

Your child's daily Phonics learning practises both reading (blending) and spelling (segmenting). The weekly spelling lists are linked to the sounds studied in class. The spelling lists may also include 'tricky words'; these are commonly used words which don't follow the Phonics rules!

Are there any online revision tools?

There are some free to play resources you can find online.

Phonics Play:

These games are used to revise levels 2 to 5 Phonics in class. The first 3 games are free without a subscription.

KS2: Spelling Frame

What is Spelling Frame?

Spelling Frame is a website designed to help students revise the statutory spelling rules and lists in line with the guidance set out in the National Curriculum. Every child in KS2 has been provided with a personal log-in for spelling Frame. Once signed in, your child can click straight through to a variety of games linked to their assigned spelling rule. Spelling Frame uses a 'word attack' method of revision, which encourages the children to notice patterns in syllables, as well as recognise the sounds and shapes of words. For many children, this approach to spelling rehearsal has been proved to be more engaging and lead to better retention than more traditional methods.

Does my child have to use Spelling Frame?

Spelling Frame is a non-compulsory resource. We understand that many parents are concerned about their child's screen-time and prefer to revise using paper-based methods. Students are not required to use online revision tools.

How do I use Spelling Frame?

It can be difficult to navigate the website for the first time. Please find below instructions for getting your child logged in and making the most of the online resources available.
